Merrick is a hamlet home in Nassau County. The community received its name from the Iroquois Indian tribe that called the area home, Meroke which translates to mean peaceful. Reverend Denton moved to the area in 1650 along with his congregation from Stamford Connecticut and established the hamlet.
Two school districts serve Merrick which are Merrick Union Free School District with 3 elementary schools and Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District offering 3 high schools. The railroad platform of the Long Island Railroad divides the hamlet into North Merrick and South Merrick. North Merrick is the older section with a large array of older homes with wrap around porches while South Merrick offers more expensive homes that are closer to the water. Residents love the variety of restaurants from fast food to fine dining, shopping, and more.
The most popular areas to visit are the Merrick Road Park Golf Course, Cammannns Pond, and the Norman J. Levy Park Preserve. The park preserve offers an operational windmill that is a great attraction for the kids.
